America Moves Toward War

At the begining of the war the U.S. was neutral but favored the French and British side. Though it remained neutral it sent large amounts of military supplies to the French and British. After the fall of France, the British had no more money to buy supplies so the U.S. put in affect the Lend-Lease Act. This was said to give any aid to any country vital to the U.S.'s survial. To stop the aid, German submarines started shooting down merchant ships. So American merchant ships started traveling with U.S. navy ships. Roosevelt then told the U.S. navy to shoot any German submarines on sight.

At this time Japan was looking to control the Pacific. They started expanding their control all over east Asia. The U.S. reacted to this agression by cutting off trade with Japan. There were peace talks but on December 6, 1941, President Roosevelt got a decoted message that said all peace plans from the United States would be rejected. The next day on December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed the Hawaiian port of Pearl Harbor. The next day the U.S. declared war on Japan, then three days later Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. This event flung the United States into World War 2.
